Introducing My Outback Footprints - Gentle Sensory Play for Kids

Discover how to help overwhelmed kids regulate their nervous system through low-demand sensory play with Chapter 1 of The Wildlife Wanderers Workbook & Kit - 👉 The Wildlife Wanderer Workbook & Sensory Kit Bundle | Coastal Edge Youth Services

When kids are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or emotionally dysregulated, asking them to "talk about it" can often feel like too much pressure. Their nervous system is already working in overdrive, and traditional verbal processing can inadvertently cause them to retreat further into protective defenses. That’s where gentle, low-demand play comes in.

Designed to pair seamlessly with Chapter 1: Meet the Wanderer from The Wildlife Wanderers Workbook, our My Outback Footprints kit offers a gentle bridge for connection, self-discovery, and grounding. It gives children the opportunity to discover what makes their spirit sparkle, map out their favourite treasures, and process big feelings at their own pace.

Here is how you can use the kit to support your young wanderer:

1️⃣ Start with the Textures: Ground the Nervous System First

As you open Chapter 1: Meet the Wanderer, invite your child to explore the rich textures of the Gum Leaves mix and the earthy Burrow Red base.

When a child is overstimulated, tactile sensation provides an immediate physical anchor. Letting them feel these outback textures allows their nervous system to down-regulate and ground before any verbal conversation or reflection begins.

2️⃣ Stamp It Out: Map Safe Zones & Externalise Worries

Using the custom footprint stamps, children can physically process what is happening internally without needing to find the right words.

They can use the stamps in the sensory base to map out physical "safe zones" or physically stamp away worries. This gives external form and boundaries to big feelings in a safe, low-pressure medium.

3️⃣ Meet Karu: Anchor Calm & Nurture Self-Worth

Pair the soothing outback scents with Karu Roo and gentle affirmation prompts.

This stage nurtures self-worth and helps children focus on what makes their own spirit sparkle, helping them anchor a sense of calm, safety, and inner capability.

Perfect for Home, Classroom, or Clinic

Whether you are a parent supporting emotional regulation at the kitchen table, an educator creating a calm corner in the classroom, or a practitioner holding space in a therapeutic session, My Outback Footprints adapts to your space. Because it is rooted in low-demand, trauma-informed principles, there is no single "right" way to play—only the child’s way.

Thoughtfully Crafted & Taste-Safe: My Outback Footprints is brought to life in collaboration with our friends at @littleexplorersbox  - Sensory Play Kits for Kids | Little Explorers Box Australia— taste-safe, thoughtfully crafted, and full of open-ended fun! ❤️
